Rethinking Green Cleaning: A Homesteader's Perspective

Going back to our roots and reverting to homestead living has become quite the trend in recent years. Escaping from the hustle and bustle of the city proves rewarding when you get to enjoy the simplicity and tranquility that off-grid living offers. But while many aspects of homesteading may be simple, it doesn't mean they're easy. Thus, we have to rethink our lives in different ways, even those areas we took for granted in our former lives. Cleaning is one such area to examine from an eco-friendly perspective. We need to rethink green cleaning.

In the modern world around us, shelves are swamped with chemical-filled cleaning products. They promise you sparkling floors and germ-free bathrooms. But what they don’t tell you is the enormous cost to your health and our planet. The impact of the harsh chemicals on the environment and on your skin and lungs is not a part of their sales pitch.

Homesteaders have an unspoken pact with nature. Living amidst it, they respect it and strive to minimize their footprint on Mother Earth, leading them to embrace the need for chemical free solutions for cleaning. It's an invitation to return to the basics, to methods proven efficient by our great-grandparents: using natural ingredients that are non-toxic and readily available.

A few common household items can be deployed against grime. Distilled white vinegar is a cleaning powerhouse, efficient as a descaler or mildew remover. Paired with baking soda, they conquer the kitchen sink, oven stains, or unclog drains. Not only are they safe for your skin, but they also leave no harmful residues behind.

Citrus peels, combined with vinegar, create a potent, fresh smelling cleaner that can replace commercially prepared all-purpose cleaners. Fermented for about two to three weeks, this mixture cuts through grease and grime on kitchen surfaces and bathrooms, while leaving a pleasant aroma.

As for floors and windows, the old fashioned mix of water and vinegar does wonders. Adding a drop of essential oil like lavender or tea tree not only provides extra cleaning power with their antimicrobial properties but also leaves behind a soothing, fresh scent. Reusable and washable mop heads and cleaning clothes contribute further to our zero waste goals.

In summary, green cleaning methods, a key component of homesteading, are easily achievable, extremely cost-effective, and contribute significantly towards creating a sustainable, less polluted world. When you embrace a homesteading lifestyle, you learn that nature gives back abundantly, more than synthetic, chemical-infused products ever will. Rethinking green cleaning, therefore, isn't just about switching out chemical cleaners - it's about forming a relationship with the Earth and treating it with the respect it rightfully deserves.
